Drawing on research with 275 charity leaders across the UK and United States, alongside in-depth interviews with practitioners, technologists and academics, this book explores where AI is genuinely strengthening impact — and why so many organisations still struggle to use it well.

Through real-world case studies from organisations including UNICEF, Save the Children and Oxfam, it shows how AI is improving fundraising, operations and frontline services when applied with judgement and care. It also examines the barriers that hold progress back: uncertainty, limited capacity and deep concerns about ethics, governance and trust.

At its core, this is not a book about technology. It is about leadership.

Jake O'Gorman CF

Jake O'Gorman is Director of AI Consulting at 10Pearls, a global digital engineering partner, where he helps organisations navigate the opportunities and risks of AI and turn strategy into lasting capability.

In 2025, Jake was awarded a Churchill Fellowship, the UK's national memorial to Sir Winston Churchill. His research explores responsible AI adoption within UK and US nonprofits. This book shares the findings of that work.

Jake's connection to the charity sector is longstanding. In 1988, his family founded Children with Cancer UK following the loss of two children in the same year. The charity has since raised over £330 million to support research, treatment and care, shaping Jake's enduring interest in how organisations can use technology responsibly to increase impact.

Alongside his professional work, Jake is a Freeman of the City of London, and the Worshipful Company of Information Technologists, where he supports AI4C, a learning exchange for charities working with AI and machine learning. He is a Fellow of the Royal Statistical Society, a certified Microsoft Azure AI Engineer, and holds a professional certificate in AI Governance as well as a postgraduate certificate in Corporate and Commercial Law, focusing on AI technology transfer.

Jake's career spans AI governance, commercial strategy and hands-on technical work. He has twice represented England at the World Memory Championships and won the Mind Sports Olympiad Memory World Cup. He remains fascinated by how people learn, think and solve complex problems.

Chain of Thought Books is an independent publisher exploring the space where artificial intelligence meets people, organisations and society. We publish work grounded in evidence and practice: books for the leaders, practitioners and thinkers working out what AI means for the sectors and communities they serve.

Our name borrows from a concept in AI research: chain-of-thought reasoning, where a model works through a problem step by step rather than jumping to conclusions. We think good publishing works the same way, following an idea from evidence to insight, showing the working, and trusting readers to think for themselves.
